16/11/2021 - SAVE A SEA BIRD (Facebook Município do Porto Santo)

As part of the "Save a Marine Bird" campaign, launched by SPEA (Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds), a walk was held, organized by the City Council in collaboration with the local Basic and Secondary School, on 15 November, together to the coastal zone. With this activity, it was intended to sensitize the students of the referred school to the need to preserve biodiversity, helping animals in danger.

The aforementioned campaign, which ran from October 15th to November 15th, the most critical time for the fall of juvenile birds disoriented by the artificial night light, called on Madeirans to collaborate, helping in the collection and identification of seared seabirds. Every year, this campaign saves around 200 marine birds, mostly juveniles, victims of light pollution.
