PORTO-SANTENSES VALUES - PORTO SANTO ISLAND ASPIRING THE UNESCO BIOSPHERE RESERVE

Although small, the island of Porto Santo contains heritage values of undoubted importance in the local, regional and international context.

We want to make you aware of the aspects of Porto Santo's identity that make the island of Porto Santo a very special territory and which support our candidacy for UNESCO's Biosphere Reserve.

Gastronomy

The hand mill, an indispensable tool for any Porto-Santos family of yore, was used to grind grain and obtain flour. After sifting the finest wheat flour was used in the “bolo do caco”, bread so designated because it was made on top of a volcanic rock - the shard, heated by fire and based on a metallic structure - the trivet. The flour was also used in the production of couscous, cooked with “steam” in the clay couscous and sprinkled with a sprig of savory wet in the water.

Porto Santo, like you there is no equal!
