PORTO-SANTENSES VALUES - PORTO SANTO ISLAND ASPIRING THE UNESCO BIOSPHERE RESERVE

Although small, the island of Porto Santo contains heritage values of undoubted importance in the local, regional and international context. We want to make you aware of the aspects of Porto Santo's identity that make the island of Porto Santo a very special territory and which support our candidacy for UNESCO's Biosphere Reserve.

Matamorra

Matamorra is a sixteenth-century structure with a more or less cylindrical or peripheral plant, excavated in the soil for the storage and preservation of cereals, once abundant on the Island of Porto Santo, which allowed its concealment from pirates and privateers who frequently assaulted the island. After the hole was made, usually inside the dwellings, the walls were lined with stone, straw and clay and covered its opening with boards and earth. In the city center we can find two specimens inside the Casa Colombo - Porto Santo Museum and one in Largo do Pelourinho.
